Illiterate Northern Kenyans Get Voice Information about Elections via Mobile

Illiterate Northern Kenyans are using a system that allows them to call a number to get more information about the Kenyan election through a voice menu. This makes it easier for them to vote.

About 87% of the people living in Samburu, Kenya is illiterate. Because people are not able to read or write they often lack information and have no idea what their rights are. This becomes particularly apparent in the run up to the election (planned for upcoming March 4th), when many Samburu citizens have the right to vote, but have little idea on registration procedures or what they are actually voting for. With the explosive growth of mobile phone usage in Africa, people now do have access to information. That’s why international organisations Text to Change (TTC), IICD and Kenyan organisation SEED Samburu, set up an Interactive Voice Response (IVR) campaign to educate the Samburu about their civil rights in the new constitution and on the upcoming elections. Via the TTC platform a toll free line is set up which guides callers through a menu by voice. Via this line callers can choose subjects and have questions answered and acquire more information.

If you visit this wiki, you probably want to register for the free, open and online MobiMOOC course which will run from Saturday 8 September - Sunday 30 September 2012 and will focus on learning/training with mobile devices (mLearning).

Dynamics of the course:

a MOOC is all about dialogue, discussions and building upon each others experiences. We all have lived long enough to know more of certain areas than others. In a MOOC we come together to enhance our knowledge on a certain field by entering dialogues, enhancing our networks and … having fun while doing it. As such each of the resources given by the facilitators or guides-on-the-side are just possible stepping stones, not the universal truth. By gathering together each one of us will grow by communicating with each other. Looking forward to all our discussions and insights!

UCSD Electronic Wireless Tattoo Receives Grant from the Gates Foundation

See on Scoop.it - Perspectives on Health

Described as an electronic “tattoo”, the device is a wearable patch of circuits, sensors, and wireless transmitters that sticks to the skin like a temporary tattoo and is able to stretch and flex with the skin. The researchers hope that the final product will continuously measure and monitor uterine contractions, fetal heart rate and oxygen, and maternal heart rate and body temperature. According to Todd Coleman, professor of bioengineering and head of the project, the device is unique because of its ability to continuously check a number of different measurements in an unobtrusive manner. Moreover, the device will work well in developing countries that lack sufficient healthcare access, but have high mobile phone usage, as it will transmit data wirelessly to a cellphone and on to the cloud to be viewed by physicians far away. Be sure to read about some of the other grant winners here. There’s a lot of neat research being done in the areas of vaccines, synthetic biology, and global health.

How Teachers Make Cell Phones Work in the Classroom

See on Scoop.it - Studying Teaching and Learning

At its core, the issues associated with mobile learning get to the very fundamentals of what happens in class everyday. At their best, cell phones and mobile devices seamlessly facilitate what students and teachers already do in thriving, inspiring classrooms. Students communicate and collaborate with each other and the teacher. They apply facts and information they’ve found to formulate or back up their ideas. They create projects to deepen their understanding, association with, and presentation of ideas.
