MOOCs do not represent the best of online learning

Thus far little attention has been paid to the quality of MOOCs. Quality in online learning can be defined in many ways: quality of content, quality of design, quality of instructional delivery, and, ultimately, quality of outcomes. On the face of it, the organizing principles of MOOCs are at odds with widely observed best practices in online education, including those advocated by my organization, the Quality Matters Program. Many of the first MOOCs are providing quality of content, but are far behind the curve in providing quality of design, accountable instructional delivery, or sufficient resources to help the vast majority of students achieve a course’s intended learning outcomes.

The race to develop online university courses is continuing to gather pace, with one of the biggest in the US, University of Texas, joining the edX project.

The alliance, which already includes MIT, Harvard and the University of California, Berkeley, currently has more than 200,000 students, 19,000 academic staff and an annual operating budget of $13bn (£8bn).

The men and women who attend the Sloan Consortium’s annual meeting have been toiling in the fields of online learning for many years, so they could be forgiven for having a wee bit of skepticism (if not resentment) about “MOOC mania,” the hubbub of hyper-attention that has been paid in recent months to the massive open online courses developed by Harvard, MIT, Stanford and other elite universities.

“MOOCS will change the world and make the rest of higher education obsolete. Hyper-prestigious universities are driving all the change. Umm, I don’t think so, folks,” Jack Wilson, president emeritus of the University of Massachusetts system and Distinguished Professor of Higher Education, Emerging Technologies, and Innovation at the University of Massachusetts at Lowell, said during the conference’s opening plenary Wednesday afternoon.
