Medical Mistakes: Human Error or System Failure

See on Scoop.it - Perspectives on Health

“The now famous report on medical errors from the Institute of Medicine (IOM) - “To Err is Human: Building a Safer Health System” - included dramatic and now often-quoted statistics. At least 44,000 to 98,000 deaths may occur annually as a result of medical errors in US hospitals. These numbers, if accurate, would make hospitals the eighth leading cause of death in America and do not even include medical errors in the outpatient setting. This would rank the lethality of US hospitals ahead of motor vehicle accidents, breast cancer, and AIDS.”

Functional neurologic abnormalities due to prenatal alcohol exposure are common

Most children who are exposed to large amounts of alcohol while in the womb do not go on to develop fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS).

Instead, problems that arise fall under a broader term that describes a spectrum of adverse outcomes, fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD). A study using population-based prospective data from Chile to examine the risk for developing components of FASD has found that functional central nervous system abnormalities were alarmingly high.

The “dis-abled” argument is central to bipolar disorder.

There are, of course, many other interesting aspects to debate, but it is hard to find any discussions about bipolar that do not include one or more of these central topics. While it has been very healthy to debate all of them, there is an underlying assumption that must be addressed too.

Brain Activity Differs in Infant Siblings of Children with Autism

See on Scoop.it - Psychology Matters

A new study shows that infants as young as 6 months who are siblings of children with autism have different patterns of brain activity compared to infants who do not have a sibling with autism. These differences in brain activity were present even in infant siblings who did not go on to develop autism. Thus, they may reflect genetic differences that are shared by children with autism and their younger siblings.

The Strange Neuroscience of Immortality

See on Scoop.it - Psychology Matters

“Hayworth has spent much of the past few years in a windowless room carving brains into very thin slices. He is by all accounts a curious man, known for casually saying things like, “The human race is on a beeline to mind uploading: We will preserve a brain, slice it up, simulate it on a computer, and hook it up to a robot body.” He wants that brain to be his brain. He wants his 100 billion neurons and more than 100 trillion synapses to be encased in a block of transparent, amber-colored resin—before he dies of natural causes.”

Distance Education Should Be a Viable Solution to Create Quality Teaching

“Unfortunately, many models of distance education in poorer countries do little, in their current form, to help “develop” the kind of high quality teachers students need. This has less to do with technology. Rather it is the cumulative result of perceptions, understandings of change and an overly narrow focus on scale …”
