Colleges say 'swathe of cuts' threatens adult education - About Education Degrees

Breastfeeding 'linked to higher IQ'
A long-term study published in The Lancet Global Health has pointed to a link between breastfeeding and intelligence. The research in Brazil traced nearly 3,500 babies, and results appear to back current advice that babies should be exclusively breastfed for six months.

Schools in Finland will no longer teach 'subjects' | EDUcation CHANGE | Teaching by Topic
For years, Finland has been the by-word for a successful education system, perched at the top of international league tables for literacy and numeracy.

Pasi Silander, the city’s development manager, explained: “What we need now is a different kind of education to prepare people for working life.

“Young people use quite advanced computers. In the past the banks had lots of bank clerks totting up figures but now that has totally changed.
.
“We therefore have to make the changes in education that are necessary for industry and modern society.”
.
Subject-specific lessons – an hour of history in the morning, an hour of geography in the afternoon – are already being phased out for 16-year-olds in the city’s upper schools. They are being replaced by what the Finns call “phenomenon” teaching – or teaching by topic. For instance, a teenager studying a vocational course might take “cafeteria services” lessons, which would include elements of maths, languages (to help serve foreign customers), writing skills and communication skills.

More academic pupils would be taught cross-subject topics such as the European Union - which would merge elements of economics, history (of the countries involved), languages and geography.

The 2015 SXSWedu Conference and Festival is underway in Austin, Texas.
“Is the purpose of college to get an education or a job?” asked Jeffrey Selingo, professor of practice at Arizona State University, during his presentation, “Redesigning the Overworked Bachelor’s Degree.”
Selingo explained that a number of higher-education institutions already are piloting innovative alternatives to the bachelor’s degree that are designed to better meet the needs of today’s economy.

Storyboard That Offers ELA Teacher Guides -- THE Journal
Storyboard That has launched its first guides designed to help teachers use storyboards as an educational tool in an ELA unit.
Each teacher guide is focused on a specific unit like Greek Mythology, a famous literary work like Macbeth or an American classic like “The Raven.” Every guide contains at least seven detailed, Common Core-aligned activities with starter templates that teachers can use.
The company chose the activities based on feedback from teachers during the two years that Storyboard That has been in classrooms. Each activity comes with an extended lesson plan if a teacher wants to learn more.

The worth of a degree - Masters and PhDs
What is the worth of a degree? Some commentators maintain that degrees are a waste of time and money. It is certainly true that they are expensive in the US and many students find themselves to be in serious debt at the end of their studies. So is it worthwhile getting a degree?
The answer to this question depends on how you define ‘worth’. If you define it in terms of getting a job, then as the BLS analysis shows, you are more likely to be unemployed without a degree. If you define ‘worth’ in terms of earning potential, then you are more likely to earn more with a degree than without one. So, if worth is measured by earnings and employment prospects, then numerically a degree looks worthwhile.

Synchronous e-learning: Reflections and design considerations
This paper is a personal reflection on the design, development, and delivery of online synchronous conferencing as a pedagogical tool complementing traditional, face-to-face content delivery and learning. The purpose of the paper is to demonstrate how instructors can combine collaborative and virtual learning principles in course design. In particular, the paper asserts that instructors should take into account relative advantage, compatibility, complexity, and risk attributes of new technologies before incorporating them to their courses. Further, it is important to evaluate organizational support availability such as financial resources and managerial support.
